Paddle Surfing in the Maldives

Travel through the Maldivian Atolls on your own private surf yacht.

I’m thrilled to be back in the Maldives, eagerly anticipating our paddle surf adventure in 2027. This marks my third journey with Moon Tours, a company that has been delivering exceptional experiences in the Maldives for over a decade, catering to travelers in search of a unique surfing experience in one of the most stunning locations on the planet. Over the course of 10 nights, we’ll navigate the heart of the Maldives aboard the splendid MV Adora, chasing the swell, wind, and conditions wherever they may lead us. As I look back on my previous trips, a few key insights from these surf excursions truly stand out.

Boat Supported Surf Exploration

Our basecamp surf yacht, the comfortable and spacious 125' Adora, is complemented by an 80' support boat that takes us directly to the surf break while the Adora remains anchored behind. Additionally, a 15' tender is available for individual pickups in the surf when our clients are ready to end their session. Both of these boats serve as our safety net during our time on the water, and the 80' Doni also provides a platform for those interested in world-class diving. What excites me the most is that these boats journey 300km south through the Maldivian atolls before making our way back the same distance to the capital of Male. This is akin to exploring the entire west coast of Vancouver Island and then adding another 150km up to the central coast of British Columbia—all within a 10-night adventure. Such extensive exploration offers a fantastic opportunity to discover these stunning atolls, helping us escape the crowds in pursuit of the consistent surf the Maldives are celebrated for.

Local Surf Guides and the Incredible Staff Aboard

I consider myself truly fortunate to collaborate with two exceptional local surf guides. Big Naan serves as the Moon Tours manager, leveraging his extensive local knowledge and a decade of experience to help us navigate changing conditions wisely. He coordinates with other local operators and boat surf charters to establish a “schedule” at the various breaks we visit, minimizing crowding. Additionally, Big Naan captures your surf adventures in the Maldives with stunning photos and drone footage, which we share at the end of the day, available for purchase. Our group also includes Little Naan, an enthusiastic surfer who is always in the water, assisting clients in finding their rhythm in the breaks and working alongside me to ensure ocean safety. Both Big Naan and Little Naan are remarkable individuals, always sporting a smile. They put in tremendous effort behind the scenes, with the primary objective of ensuring we have a fantastic time and catch plenty of waves. Onboard both the Adora and the Dhoni, we are supported by an incredible staff that includes chefs, boat drivers, dive captains, and a crew dedicated to maintaining the rooms and keeping the boats in excellent condition. With a team of 13, the level of service exceeds a 1:1 support-to-client ratio. I was truly impressed during our first year when we brought the entire team out to be acknowledged for their outstanding service and exceptional meal planning.

Intimate group sizes and abundant waves

On my inaugural adventure with Moon Tours, there were twelve surfers, but to commemorate a decade of paddle surfing in the Maldives, owner Trent Moon reduced this to just ten. This makes for a more intimate group ready to enjoy the reliable waves of the Maldives. The main swell season extends from April to October, with peak consistency found between May and October. From April to June, you can often find pristine, glassy conditions. My first two journeys to the Maldives took place during the last two weeks of May, and this year’s trip will occur in the first two weeks of June, perfectly aligning with that exceptional swell window.

Best Equipment Under Your Feet

Moon Tours has made a significant investment in the quality of your on wave experience and have the best paddle surf boards on the boat for rent. They carry a full range of Sunova Surfboards that you can secure once you make a booking. This can save you the hassle of flying down with your own paddle surf board but ensures that you have the best equipment to surf while in the Maldives.

Reach  if you have any questions about this experience, I would be happy to get on a call with you to make sure this trip meets and exceeds your expectations. Have a look at our trip brochure for additional details.

See you on the water,

Norm
